YAROSLAV
Yaroslaviv Val 13, 212-4260
Ukrainian - Continental
Great food at very reasonable prices. Interesting decor of the
Kievan Rus period. The downstairs is decorated with a castle-like
ambiance. Pleasant and well worth it.

Another Kievan Rus castle decor serving Ukrainian food. Read about
it in EE's Dining Guide. Sounds like a nice place to take the family
or kids.

ZAMOK VYDUBYCHI 5
Naberezhno-Pecherska, 247-9940
Ukrainian - Continental - Fish
Although it was difficult to find (4 taxi
drivers did not know how to get there), the restaurant decor and river-side
location were interesting and promised a pleasant experience. Unfortunately,
this was not to be. When we walked in, the place was empty except
for a table with a party of 10 in one corner. We were seated at a
table by the window (one of several with the same type of location
and view). The menu was nicely done and again promised of interesting
things to come. The waiter was pleasant and helpful and we ordered
wine, mineral water, appetizers, and main courses. The whole process
took 20-30 minutes which we did not mind since the view and atmosphere
were soothing and pleasant. Suddenly, the Maitre D' (a rather large
young woman) appeared and asked us to move to another table. This
was most incomprehensible since all tables were the same and all were
empty (except for one in the corner). We asked not to be moved since
the waiter was ready to serve us our wine. However the Maitre D' insisted
and would not take no for an answer. She indicated that the table
was reserved (no reserve sign) for her friend from the restaurant
business. We again indicated that all tables were the same, had the
same view, and were in basically the same location. She was adamant:
"No - you cannot sit there, you have to move." Even the waiter was
shocked. Needless to say, we left - never to return. My recommendation:
Don't bother. The place is far, difficult to get to, and you don't
need the aggravation of a Maitre D' that does not know how to treat
customers. Food: Don't know - never go to taste any.
ZA DVOMA ZAYTSIAMY (After 2 Hares)
Andriyivskyj Uzviz 34, 416-3516
Ukrainian - Slavic
One of the most pleasant and interesting restaurants in Kyiv. Lovingly
decorated by the owner and boasting attentive service. The food
is Ukrainian but delicious (I have been criticized for saying this,
but I find most Ukrainian fare outside of "Lypskyj Osobnyak" to
be uninspired and bland). A great place for a leisurely coffee,
tea, or drink when visiting Andriyivskyj Uzviz. The restaurant also
features shows (currently "Moulin Rouge") which will add to your
entertainment and dining pleasure. Several rooms so it is ideal
for parties. Not to be missed.

ZAPORIZHIA
Podil, 27 Sahaydachnoho, 416-2309
French.
Once "the" place to take your date to impress him or her to the
n'th degree. Now it suffers from the lack of care, the inability
to change with the times, and trying to please everyone. The French
food prepared by Chef Richard is superb. The desserts - outstanding.
Zaporizhia's problem however is that its management believes it
must maintain the restaurant "as is" in order to please its few
steady and stalwart clients. While other restaurants in the city
move with the times and new (and great) ones open at the rate of
one a week - this could be a mistake.

ZOLOTA RYBKA (Golden Fish)
Vul. Arsenalna 9/11, 294-9180
Fish - Seafood.
Outstanding Fish. I have never had a bad meal here (although in
winter months I was so cold that I had to rush through the meals).
The decor is cold (good for summer months, but not pleasant in the
winter), lots of marble, fish tanks in the floor, even marble seating
(with cushions) in places. The prices are reasonable; the wine selection
is good, and the service attentive. Do come and enjoy - but in winter
- wear warm clothes.

ZORRO (NR)
Saksahanskoho 67, 227-1278
Steakhouse.
What can you expect from a "steakhouse" that also advertises "an
extensive menu". I can only guess: a little of this and a little
of that, and something for everyone - none of which can really be
exceptional - don't you agree? I think small restaurants should
stick to small menus.
