GAVROCHE, LE (NR)
Podil, 3/7 Mezhyhirska,
French.
|
Great French provincial food if the part owner/chef is in place
and watching the kitchen (unfortunately he often is not and the
cuisine suffers). Decor is French provincial but beginning to wear
around the edges. Once very popular with the French diplomatic corps,
but the rumor goes that dancing on the tables at a reception by
the part owner/chef resulted in their present avoidance of the establishment.

GOLD CUP
Vul Moskovska 22, 254-2024
Spanish

|
3 floors of wonderful entertainment, eating
and drinking. Great paella's and other Spanish fare. Not cheap - but
good. After dinner - a pleasant game of billiards and socializing
with the bar crowd. Authentic decor and atmosphere. You feel as if
you stepped into a club in Madrid. |
GOLDEN DRAGON (NR)
Pr. Povitroflotskiy 25, 276-1002
Chinese.

My Chinese food lover friends had nothing good to say about this
out of the way establishment. I have not tried it, so I should not
comment. Let me know if you have any good experiences.

GOLDEN GATE PUB
40/2 Volodymyrska, 235-5188
Irish - Continental - Ukrainian

|
Wonderful Pub atmosphere which belies the tasty, plentiful and
diverse food. If you are expecting traditional Pub food (that tasteless
variety you find in other places) then you are in for a treat. Just
about every dish is very good to exceptional. The steaks are large,
tasty, and well prepared. The sandwiches are the best in Kyiv. The
duck dishes are outstanding as are all of the appetizers (with the
exception of the Irish potatoes). The salads are most interesting
- especially the Caesar's salad which is not the classical kind
but it fills you up and tastes great. Live music on weekends at
the lower bar which tends to fill up quickly so come early.

GORETS (Hill)
9 Vorovskoho Vul
Georgian

|
I have never had a bad meal here. Although
I am not a connoisseur of Georgian or Caucasus cooking, I thoroughly
enjoy the atmosphere, fine tasting food, and exceptional wines in
this homey restaurant. The only drawbacks are the prices (quite high
for this type of restaurant) and the fact that if they are even half
full with regular customers, service will tend to be very slow. I
love experimenting, so I rarely remember the foods that I had but
the kachipuri is excellent. |
GREAT CHINA (NR)
84 Horkoho, 268-6210
Chinese
|
According to Daniel Mac Isaac of the Kyiv
Post in the 4 April 2002 issue, this "refined clientele" restaurant
boasts "fine dining". He states that "Great China holds enough promise
that we didn't regret our promise to ourselves to pay a return visit".

HANOI
Sichnevoho Povstanya 115, 290-9398
Vietnamese

|
As you enter you are welcomed by the God Shiva - the symbol of
the restaurant. Then you hear Vietnamese music as the hostess welcomes
you into this charming and sumptuously and authentically decorated
restaurant. All the amenities are present to make you feel warm
and welcome. My experience with Vietnamese foods in Hanoi was exceptional
and I remember fondly the great restaurants that I found there.
I had been very disappointed with Long Phuong in Podil, but my trepidations
were unfounded. The food at Hanoi is as good as the decor and atmosphere.
I highly recommend their spring rolls (Vietnamese style) and their
spicy fish. The restaurant is also associated with U Hetmana Restaurant
next door which features Ukrainian cooking and live music.

Hetman
Sahaydachnoho 8/10, 416-4535
Ukrainian - Continental.
|
Be careful, there are several restaurants
in Kyiv called "Hetman" with the same "Hetman" brand of vodka and
spirits writing. These are not franchises and they are not part of
the same group. All are independent. There are Herman restaurants
on Institutska Vul across from National Bank, also next to the Hanoi
Restaurant, and I have seen others in other areas but I can't recall
where. This particular "Hetman" is a cozy little place with wood bench
seating against the walls, period pictutes above the seating, and
a pleasant atmosphere. The service is attentive and the prices very
reasonable (as in all Hetman restaurants). The dishes include a variety
of meats from lamb to veal to pork. The preparation of these dishes
as well as the names are quire original. Fish and seafood dishes are
also available, as are a variety of excellent desserts. |
HOKKAIDO (NR)
Saksahanskoho 26b, 246-6610
Japanese - Sushi
|
Tried it 3 times. The last time the tuna sushi looked like it was
there since WWII. Others seem to like it though. Maybe I'm too picky
with my sushi selections. The restaurant has a variety of Japanese
style cuisines including sashimi, teppan yaki, yakitori, and tempura.

HORIKH (NR) (Nut or Peanut)
126 Velyko Vasylkivska (Chervonoarmiyska) 269-4232
|
Pub/bar. One of Eric Aigner's offerings to the Kyiv pub/bar scene.
This 24 hour establishment specializes in beer, and lots of it,
to wash down all those peanuts that are served free but in-the-shell.
Favorite among the University crowd, the place is kept hopping.
Food is good but nothing special. Notable are the sandwiches, soups,
and appetizers.

HOSTYNNYJ DVIR (Welcome Garden)
(NR)
4 Kontraktova Pl. 416-6876
Ukrainian
|
Pricey Ukrainian food in an authentic setting with staff dressed
in Ukrainian costumes. Before Khutorets and Kozak Mamai opened,
this was the place to take your friends from abroad to sample Ukrainian
fare. Many specialty dishes that you will not find anywhere else.

HERMITAGE
Velyko Zhytomyrska 6
French - Ukrainian

|
Two restaurants in one. One elegant the other casual. Good food,
friendly service and a warm atmosphere. One of those places you
would want to come back to over and over if you only lived or worked
in the neighborhood. So if you do - you should consider it.

HIMALAYA
Khreshchatyk 23, 462-0437
Indian

|
Good to mediocre Indian cooking but it will repeat on you for hours,
so eat early. The chef loves oil and grease - so there is plenty
of it with all the dishes. The grease helps coat the stomach if
you are sensitive to Indian spices, but if you like Indian food
as I do, all you taste is oil. The only recommended dishes are the
vegetarian Samosas and the Tandoori dishes which fortunately are
not cooked in grease. Breads are good but skimpy and relatively
expensive. My favorite bread "aloo paratha" leaves a lot to be desired.
