BARABAN (Drum)
Prorizna 44a, 229-2355
Ukrainian.

|
Took me 5 years to find it (if it has been around that long) but
it was worth it. Nice, friendly little place with a warm atmosphere,
good food (reasonably priced), and lots of local and ex-pat clientele.
Definitely difficult to find even if you have good directions. Due
to its location it is frequented by most journalists and media-types
in Kyiv but it has enough varied clientele to make it interesting.

BARCELONA
Vul. Kopernica 23, 213-7063
Spanish

|
Reasonably priced Spanish fare in an interesting and almost authentic
establishment. I love paella and this restaurant does not disappoint.
Well worth a visit. Notable are the desserts which I can only wish
I could indulge in. Too bad they don't have a "tappas" hour as they
do in Spain. This would make it "perfect".

BELLEVUE or BELLE VUE (Nice View)
7 Saksahanskoho, 220-8780
Belgian - Flemish - Fish - Continental

|
Belgian pub/restaurant which became an instant hit with the downtown
crowd. Extensive Belgian and other variety of beer offerings keeps
the place hopping. Great place for girl watching (or boy-watching-girls
watching). Music (usually Jazz) on weekends.

BELVEDERE (NR)
Volodymyrskyj Uzviz 2, 229-0259
Ukrainian - Italian - French
|
Sounds like a place that can't make up its mind as to what it wants
to be. A little of this, and a little of that - and you get? - duck
soup. Recommended by some of the guides as having atmosphere and
good food. Maybe it's not so bad after all? Let me know what you
think.

BILYJ SKORPION (White Scorpion)
Baseina 19, 246-4125
Ukrainian.

Once my favorite place for Sunday morning Crepes (blintzes, nalysniky,
thin pancakes). Enjoyed with some cold Ukrainian champagne, fresh
orange juice, and strong coffee, makes every Sunday a unique holiday.
Unfortunately the place is very inconsistent. Sometimes no apple
blintzes, sometimes no cheese (tvoroh) ones, sometimes no fresh
orange juice, and usually no cold champagne (requiring a wait till
it cools in an ice bucket). Nevertheless, it is a nice enough place
with reasonable prices, but don't expect much from the neo-Ukrainian-modern
decor.

BON-BON
Leontovycha 3, 244-3564
Ukrainian and desserts.

|
Good desserts but completely uninteresting food. Some of the clientele
makes your skin crawl so don't give anyone a hard time or a dirty
look. Staff tries to be friendly, but if I had to deal with the
clients the way they do, I would scream. If you want to see where
New Ukrainians hang out in the daylight, this is definitely one
of the places.

BOSPHOROUS-ISTANBUL
Horkoho 97, 269-0551
Turkish.- Moroccan
|
Once the only Turkish restaurant worth visiting, it still retains
a good kitchen and tasty food. Don't go for the decor (very basic)
or for the drinks. But if you want a nice sampling of Turkish pizzas,
doner kebabs, CousCous, Tajine, and real Turkish sweets, then you
should definitely put this on your list of places to visit.

be disappointed.

BUDYNOK KAVY (NR)
(Coffee house) Passage, Khreshchatyk 15
Desserts
|
Only coffee and desserts, but definitely a great place to hang
out with the "in-people" if you can afford it. Prices are those
of upscale coffee shops in Berlin, Paris, New York, and London.
Why? Rated as No. 2 in "Best Cup O' Mud" category by Kyiv Post readers.

BUTTERFLY (NR)
Baseina 5b, 244-9135
Ukrainian/Continental
|
"Delicious food at reasonable prices". I don't think so! Reasonable
prices - maybe, but "delicious" food seems to be an overstatement.
I would say: average to below average. The place is a throwback
to when building materials could not be found in Kyiv and everyone
was using what they could. There is not much atmosphere, no interesting
decor, and the staff looks at you as if you just landed from Mars
(no New York is not on Mars).

Never been to this restaurant even though I lived next door to
it for a year and drove by it a thousand times. However, my partner
claims that the fare is only "in the acceptable" range. Supposedly
a popular place with Kyiv politicians (according to EE's Dining
Guide).

CAPTAIN NEMO
Podil, 15/7 Khoreva, 467-6135 (Near Kontraktova Ploshcha)
Fish and Italian.

|
The decor dominates this establishment. As expected it is based
on the Jules Verne novel: "20000 leagues under the sea". The Fish
is very good and reasonably priced, but there is nothing really
outstanding. The problem seems to be with the inability of these
theme restaurants to stick to one specialty rather than offer a
"Diner" experience offering everything for everyone.
|
CAPUCHIN or KAPUCHIN (NR)
81 Velyko Vasylkivska (Chervonoarmiyska), 531-1378
French
|
Kyiv Post's Daniel Mac Isaac writes in his review of 28 February
2002 that: "Capuchin captures flavor, finesse of French cuisine",
and "Capuchin boasts great food, reasonable prices, and atmosphere
to spare."

CARAMBOL (NR)
Horodetskoho 10/1 (Entrance actually on M. Zankovetska), 228-2970
Snacks - Ukrainian
|
Once a favorite hang out of the ex-pat crowd (especially in the
colder months), now a total "ghost town". A few hard-core billiard
players still visit, but now it is mostly locals. If you listen
hard enough you will still hear echoes of good times gone by, but
mostly now it will be the TV set. The only plus is that if you want
company of a few bartenders at 4am, the bar is still open. Open
24 hours.

CARMEN
Moskovska 7, 251-1128
Ukrainian - Continental

|
With a name like Carmen and the Spanish decor, you would expect
Spanish fare. This is not to be (although I think I saw one or two
Spanish dishes on the menu). However, this place has the best varenyky
I have ever eaten in Kyiv. It has been a while since I have been
there so I must make it a point to go back.

CARIBBEAN CLUB
Kominterna 4, 244-4290
Caribbean - Latin
|
If you call this Caribbean cuisine, you will be sentenced for all
eternity to eat sawdust and sand. The food rates among the lower
20% in taste and 10% in presentation. On most nights Latinos and
would be Latinos woo the young Ukrainian chippies with their hot
glances and smooth talk, and the atmosphere is definitely lively.
The music is about the only thing that is Caribbean here. The decor
- if you want to call it that is a conglomeration of bright colors
with little taste and very little rhyme or reason.

CENTRAL (NR)
Podil, Mezhyhirska 28, 247-0689
Fish.

According to Kyiv Post's Food Guy: "Central, bills itself as a
top-end restaurant, but still has a ways to go to match the big
boys." Try it and tell us what you think.

Central Restaurant (NR)
28 Mezhyhirska Vul., 467-7826
French
|
Billed as "an affordable, family-style French
restaurant" this is a new restaurant that just opened in Podil. Just
my luck that we moved out of the neighborhood a few months ago so
now it will be a trip to get there. I'm glad to see that the old neighborhood
is getting a series of new restaurants. Many of them worthwhile. Gavroche
needs the competition if it is to get good again. |

3 floors of entertainment and good food. Nothing spectacular though.
Busy with a yuppie crowd on most days. Great location which brings
in a nice crowd on most days. One of my friends commented that he
could not recall having any notable meat dishes here and that he
thought this was a fish restaurant. I tried to recall but couldn't
remember any either. Any readers out there care to comment?

Sitting atop the Kyiv-Donbas center, this Kyiv up-scale favorite
boasts exotic and delectable French/Asian cuisine. The views of
Kyiv present a romantic atmosphere and the Fish is some of the city's
pride and joy. Plan to spend a bundle here since nothing is in the
inexpensive category. According to Zephyr this restaurant was the
winner of First place in "Best Cuisine" and second place in "Best
Wine List" categories in the "Gold Cap 2002" contest.

CORSAR or CORSAIR
Podil, 14B Sahaydachnoho, 416-5578
Fish.

|
Eating Fish so far from the sea is never recommended, but Corsair
puts up a good effort with a variety (if pricey) Fish offerings.
You can find any type of fresh or frozen variety of fish or shellfish
in this nicely decorated restaurant. Fortunately, the preparation
is simple and traditional but good. Interesting decor in a Pirate
ship style. Great desserts and a nice wine selection.

COWBOY
Passage, Khreshchatyk 15
Hamburger fare.

|
My friend Dave would be proud of the way the place turned out and
its longevity; if he could return to Kyiv. This was his idea, his
concept, his project, and his dream. The rumor goes that he was
asked to leave and never return - by whom? Who knows - Dave won't
talk. The current outdoor action figures are a nice addition to
the Passage Parking Lot. (By the way - where else in the world do
you have cars traveling at 75km per hour on a dead-end street or
a parking lot?). Lively place with average tasting munchies and
snacks. Favorite among the tourists and ex-pats who still think
of themselves as tourists. Very, very varied clientele, but great
music and interesting atmosphere.
