Repair
Shops
By Walter Prochorenko
An interesting aspect
of Ukrainian life is that you can always find a shop that will repair
just about everything for you. I have had things repaired that Westerners
would never even think of repairing. I'm not talking about repairing
that toaster or that washing machine (both are a piece of cake in
Ukraine's repair world). I'm talking about some really complex stuff.
I have seen Ukrainian craftsmen repair Mercedes,
Land Rovers, Computer Boards, Instruments, and yes that toaster.
Wait - you say - but they also do similar
repairs on Mercedes automobiles and land Rovers in the West. Sure
but not like in Ukraine. In the West, they take a factory part and
put it in. Done. In Ukraine, where they don't have the factory parts,
they make them. And sometimes, yes sometimes, these parts are better
than the original. |

I recently had a friend bring in a Chevy
Truck to Ukraine. One of he parts wore out or broke and with great
difficulty, he ordered and obtained another part. Unfortunately GM,
sent him the wrong part. So my friend had a new part made in a local
shop, and a year later it still works as a charm.
If you need anything repaired, from that
broken strap, to the tear in your leather jacket, to that gold necklace,
to that computer video card, - don't hesitate. Take it to a local
repair store. You will be very pleased. And the cost - peanuts. If
they charge you 1 hryvnya for a small repair job, you overpaid. (Most
Ukrainians pay even less).
One of the best places to have anything
repaired is in Kyiv to the left of the Khryschatyk McDonalds. There
in the courtyard, by the embankment, is a group of shops that will
repair anything. So go - satisfy that Mac attack - and have that strap
repaired. |
