Sergei Baltacha: "I am a Ukrainian"
Sergei Baltacha Jr. the son of the famous Dynamo Kyiv defender of mid 80's Sergei Baltacha Sr. plays for the Scottish 1st league club St Mirren from January, and also on a position of a defender. The youngster plays for Scotland Under-21 team, and many big English clubs showed interest in this 2m tall defender. Baltacha Jr. was in the Dynamo Youth Academy, when his father moved to Ipswich in the end of 80's.

Are you the only foreigner in St Mirren?

We have several foreigners -- one German, one Frenchman, one Dutch and me, the Ukrainian.

But you debuted for the Scotland Under-21 last year. So you switched your citizenship?

Not at all. I am still a Ukrainian citizen. As I was told, I can play for Scotland Under-21, as I lived here for a long time. I don't know all details, but in principle, I can play for Ukraine in future.

But this may violate FIFA rules...

Maybe, but there are exceptions. So far I played three games for Scotland -- vs Bosnia, Lithuania and France. I don't know if anybody in Kyiv looked at this. If I get invited to Ukrainian Team I would have gladly agreed to play. I am and was always a Ukrainian. Although I speak English much better than Russian, and don't know the language of my Motherland at all. I am trying to follow Dynamo Kyiv, but only in the Champions League. Scottish media doesn't write much about the Ukrainian or Russian football.

How about moving to the English League?

Nobody called me personally. I know this only from newspapers. Unfortunately, I injured my ankle this year, and later groin. I am now regaining my shape. I will talk to my coach after I am fully recovered.

Is your father still in St Mirren?

No, he works for the Scottish Football Association. He organizes tournaments, seminars, provides aid to coaches. It's a huge responsibility and people respect him.

Do people compare you to the father?

Not now. But earlier, yes. Now they don't even call me Jr. Btw, my father always comes to watch me play. Sometimes he is critical, but on a whole is glad that I followed his path.
