Bowling in Ukraine
Bowling appeared as an entertainment long time ago. In fact, bowling balls were discovered in one of the Egyptian Pharaoh sepultures that dated 5200 B.C. In the IV century AD bowling had even a religious meaning among the German pagan tribes. It later spread throughout Europe and finally arrived to the United States where the first bowling competition took place in 1840. During the 19th century the rules for the game were introduced. In 1895 American Bowling Congress was created.
Bowling has emerged in Ukraine just recently. But since its inception several years ago it undergone a substantial development. Presently there are some competitions organized as well as the new-born bowling sport stars. So it seems like there is a steady ground for the further development for reaching the ultimate goal of sending a team to the Olympic Games 2004.
While being very popular throughout the world, bowling remains hardly accessible to the general public in Ukraine. Very few can afford paying UHR 50-200 ($9-$36) per hour. The price varies according to the time of the day and day of the week. Bowling requires some expensive equipment and accessories which cost turns out to be 1.5 times higher in Ukraine than elsewhere. The sport is still exotic to the average Ukrainian. There are only 3 bowling clubs in Ukraine: 2 in Kiev ("Mirage" and "Strike") and 1 in Kharkiv. As a matter of fact, the Kharkiv has its own bowling team that participated in the World and European Championships. The team received recognition in the NIS and Baltic Bowling Competitions. As a rule, professional bowlers get a fee entry for practice to the aforementioned clubs.
