New Prime Minister for Ukraine

The latest "serious" rumor from Hrushevskoho Street
is that Prime Minister Yuschenko will definitely be removed before summer
is upon us. Although there are a number of candidates vying for the position,
among them Medvechuk, Tyhypko, and Pinchuk, the nod will most likely go
to Kinakh.
The removal of Viktor Yushchenko appears to be backed
by a number of factions, all of whom consider the Prime Minister too dangerous
to their private interests. These factions include block factions in the
Rada, particularly the Communists. These are afraid to lose their power
base if Yushchenko supporters gain political power. Another group are
the oligarchs who feel that Yushchenko threatens their livelihood since
he advocates a transparent form of government. Even the president sees
the Prime Minister as being too "clean and honest" to be in the business
of the government.
The major supporters of the Prime Minister are the
young people of Ukraine and the general population. However, they concede
that they do not have enough power and influence to provide Victor Yushchenko
with the support that he needs to remain in office. Ukrainians are still
not aware of "people power" that has recently had major influences and
upheavals in world politics in countries like Indonesia, Philippines,
Korea, Rumania, and even Yugoslavia.
Anatoliy Kinakh, president of the Ukrainian Union of
Industrialist and Entrepreneurs, (a position previously held by President
Kuchma) is seen as the likely successor to Victor Yuschenko and even a
possible successor to President Kuchma. He is seen as the candidate that
is most likely to follow the programs of the present day government and
to make the least amount of waves at a time when the country is trying
to emerge from a series of political and economic crisis.
