VELYKA STINA (Great Wall) (NR)

Konstiantynivska 2a, 230-6027

Chinese and Continental.

Why can't they just stick to Chinese and pure Chinese. Why mix in Ukrainian, Continental, etc. Expensive and not so great.

VERKHOVYNA (NR)

Poltavska 4, 243-5461

Ukrainian.

Very inexpensive Ukrainian food in a "traditional" interior.

VERNISSAGE (NR)

Sichnevoho Povstanya 17, 290-5289

Italian - Slavic

The name envisions lavish settings and exquisite cuisine. The truth of the matter is that this is a banquet hall. Great for events and big parties.

VESUVIO PIZZA 25

Reiterska, and 19 Ivana Franka 235-6681 and 234-5268

Italian - Pizza

The first Pizza joint in Kyiv. Often rated as one of the best. Delivery service. I liked it a lot before I became enamored with Da Vinci's pizza.

Viola's Bierstube

Shevchenko Boulevard, to the left of the Lenin Statue.

If you are looking for this place and don't know exactly where to go, you will not find it. Go up Shevchenko Blvd. As if you were going to Premier Palace Hotel and make a left at the first archway. At the end of the Arch there is a new wood door on the left side. Open the door, go down the stairs and you are at Viola's. (They don't make it easy). However once you are there, you will thoroughly enjoy the good snack type food (fried mushrooms, fried mozzarella, fried calamari, potato salad, and an assortment of meats, poultry, fish, etc. All are surprisingly good and the accompanying sauces to the snacks are just right.. The prices are reasonable. The decor is well thought out with bare brick walls and vaulted ceilings. The atmosphere and service - warm and friendly. Viola and Eric have the formula for success and it certainly works in this place. Far, far better than The Wall which is just down the street from it.

VITRIAK (Windmill)

Prospect Akademika Hlushkova 11, 266-7138

Ukrainian

Wonderful place to take your local or foreign friends for some authentic Ukrainian cooking, atmosphere, and music. Rustic but pleasant. Don't order too much as you will never finish it all. The food is basis by very good. Highly recommended for the "local" flavor.

VOSTOK

Podil, Naberezhno-Khryshchativska 11, 416-5375

Chinese

Good Chinese at high prices. That is not the way it should be. If the prices came down, the clientele would surely double.

THE WALL

The Bessarabska Ploscha 2, (In the basement of the Bessarabsky Rynok)

Ukrainian - Mexican.

They should rename this place "The Hole". We were actually headed for some Pizza at "The Patio" but for some reason the whole complex "Friday's" & "The Patio" were closed down. (Funny how no one in Kyiv know why a place is closed or when it will reopen - like a Chernobyl secret). Anyway - I digress. We decided to try lunch at "The Wall". The place was quite full even at 3PM (does anyone work in Kyiv?). I ordered Chicken curry and Garlic Bread and my partner the Borsch and Varenyky. What came (after ? hour) was incomprehensible. My curry was pain rice in a pan covered with a Ketchup/raisin sauce with no curry flavor whatever and a few tiny little pieces of chicken floating around. The menu said 200 gr. Of chicken but if there were 200 grams then I'm the King of Siam. 50 grams was more like it - and that is stretching it. The Borsch was watery and bland. The Varenyky - tasteless. The garlic bread - soggy. What happened to this place? I used to have a good meal/snack here when it first opened. Complaints to the waitress produced the typical response: "I only serve what they give me". With no attempt to rectify the situation. My recommendation: Go to Viola's Bierstube up the block. Much - much better.

WEINSTUB

Podil, Andriyivska 9, 416-8247

French - Ukrainian.

Alsatian cuisine in pleasant atmosphere. The food is as delicious as they claim and the prices will not put a big dent in your wallet. Just don't plan to hold any large parties here as the place just cannot handle it. A recent party of 30 required almost 4-1/2 hours to be served fully. 2 hours were needed for the first course. However, there were few complaints on the quality or the service. Music most nights makes for a pleasant experience.
