SALYUT (HOTEL RESTAURANT) (NR)
Sichnevoho Povstanya 11B, 290-7047
Ukrainian - Continental
|
Typical Ukrainian fare. Nothing spectacular. Reasonably priced.
I have yet to distinguish the cuisines of the main dining rooms
from one hotel to the other so the reviews of all hotel restaurants
will be the same. The food is cheap, filling, and representative
of Ukrainian kitchens. You will never starve in a Ukrainian hotel.

SAM'S STEAK HOUSE
Zhylyanska 37, 237-2000

|
On the site of the original Uncle Sam's (the flagship of the Uncle
Sam Group of Restaurants), this steak house is definitely not to
be missed. Great (no superb) steaks dominate the menu and are worth
every kopiyka of the price. Excellent salads and accompaniments.
I was just not thrilled with the appetizers which are really superfluous
and not worth it. All this with great service and good prices. Go!

SAN TORI
Podil. Sahaydachnoho 41, 462-4994/95
Thai - Asian - Sushi

|
For an off-the-cuff humorous review see: http://www.geocities.com/thekyivbeet/april.html
Whenever I needed my "fix" of Thai food I would go (no - run) to
San Tori for their great Pad Thai or Thom Yung Koon soup. The sushi,
although expensive, was a great appetizer and was some of the best
around. Unfortunately, the place is a victim of its own success.
The prices have been rising to a level not for the faint-of-heart.
The crowds are no longer there (which makes the prices rise even
further). The quality is still there but there are better values
around town. As for my Thai food needs - I now take a trip to Thailand
every so often and fill up on Thai food there for the price of several
meals at San Tori. I never could quite figure out the decor at San
Tori - it is a mixture of "diner" style, mixed with some oriental,
mixed with modern, mixed with whatever. No one could ever explain
it to me, however, it is comfortable and the layout is certainly
efficient. .

SEMIRAMIS
Hospitalna 12 G, (Back of the Hotel Rus' Complex)
Assyrian - Iraqi

|
In the premises formerly occupied by the Harley Club, this exotic
restaurant offers some of the more interesting Asian fares. The
kebobs, taboulahs, the tandooris and the dessert dishes are outstanding.
So is the hummus which I love. Not as spicy as their Indian or Pakistani
counterparts, these dishes nevertheless provide great taste and
satisfaction. The only drawbacks to this restaurant are its location
and cold decor. However, if you are in the mood for something exotic
in a quiet atmosphere - do go there.

SEOUL (NR)
Antonovycha (Horkoho) 12G, 220-5229
Korean.
|
I once adored Korean food. From the Kim Chee's, to the Kalbi, to
the Bool-Goki, to the sashimi's and salads. I even ate dog, horse,
and whatever else they put on my plate (I honestly was not aware
I was eating domestic animals but the taste was good). However,
since coming to Kyiv I could not find a good Korean restaurant (with
decor other than someone's kitchen), and I tried desperately to
visit Seoul Restaurant. However after 5 tries - I gave up. Every
time I went there - it was closed. Once supposedly for an LG party.
I never did make it, so if you readers ever eat at Seoul's, please
let me know.

reflect this. There are several interesting variations on the use
of spices such as Korean and Mexican with grille specials. Live music

The best thing about this restaurant is the owner (Volodymyr Hryhorovych)
who greets you with a warm smile and/or a handshake. He is most
attentive and pleasant and the ONLY restaurateur in Kyiv who will
send over a free drink or glass of wine to your table if you are
a regular customer. (Please make note of this all you restaurateurs
or would be restaurateurs out there. This is how you keep clients.)
I have never had a bad meal there and I recommend it. The food is
very good Ukrainian and most nights there is a violin player that
can make you shed a tear or two).

American - Steak

|
American - Steak Ah the promises of great
steaks such as you would find in NY at Ben Benson's, or Palm One,
or Peter Luger. Unfortunately this is not to be. The price of the
steaks is comparable to New York prices, but the quality is just not
there. It's been a long time since I've been a meat-eater, but I don't
think my taste buds have forgotten the flavor that needs to exist
for a steak to be called "superb". Soho's cuts just don't make it.
My recommendation would be to go to Sam's Steakhouse before they raise
their prices (which will be soon). |

Steak House
Chokolovskyj 16a, 241-0597
Ukrainian - Steaks.
|
Despite its name, this is not only a steak
house as it serves a variety of meat dishes other than the interestingly
named steaks. You will also find some fish and seafood dishes. The
steaks you will find here are not of "The Palm" variety. They include
marinated steaks, steaks in various sauces, steaks cooked with other
ingredients, steaks covered with cheese, etc. The results are interesting
but if you are looking for a "real" steak done in an American style,
then you had better head for Sam's Steakhouse. |

A favorite of the "up scale" and Ukrainian nouveau-riche crowds.
This is definitely an elegant restaurant with a decor worthy of
European capitals. The Connoisseur Club held one of their more successful
dinners here. If you have a big, fat wallet, or a friend who has
one, enjoy the splendor of this restaurant. Also good for impressing
the big shots in Ukraine if you want to do serious business with
them here. Specialties include 5 different types of Goose Liver,
pheasant, game selections, and rabbit pate. Live music every Friday.

SWING (NR)
Volodymyrska 11, 269-2865

Maybe I expect too much from a restaurant that charges "up-scale"
prices, but the service (particularly bar service) is very slow
although attentive. Jazz music is a specialty here on most nights,
and if you are just having a light snack and a drink, you will have
a great time. I have been to dozens of similar restaurants in Prague
and their successes should be studied. Maybe the owner should take
a trip to Prague and see what elements are missing. This could be
a fantastic place. It only needs more people and atmosphere.

Best Margaritas, best nachos (not any more, in my opinion), best

recommended for that South of the Border atmosphere and craving.
(But why do they insist on charging extra for the jalapenos? Isn't
this what makes for Mexican fare?). Lively atmosphere and attentive
service. Music on weekends. This restaurant was rated as the best
Mexican fare in Kyiv by none other than the "Food Guy" in the 28

T.G.I. FRIDAY'S
Bessarabska Ploshcha 5a, 235-4264
American.
|
Opened (together with Patio Pizza) by Rostyslav Ordovsky-Tanayevesky
Blanko, of Russia, this franchise of the American chain lack one
very important feature: a good bar. According to the owner, this
was done intentionally as "Ukrainians and Russians do not like to
'belly up to a bar'". You can't convince me of this when I see the
crowds at the American and Irish style bars around the city. Also
what is the sense of having 400 cocktails if there is no bar to
enjoy them at? Typical Friday's decor which tends to be a somewhat
uninteresting after one spent 5 years hanging out at the original
Friday's and then having it follow you around the US and the world
for the next 20 years. Good and somewhat different Friday's fare.
Lots of healthy salad dishes and grilled meats. Still a favorite
of tourists that like to come to a foreign country and feel at home
in a familiar setting.
