PANORAMA (NR)

1/2 Khreshchatyk, Top of Dnipro Hotel, 229-8588

Ever since Liudmilla Luganova took over the Dnipro Hotel, all the restaurants associated with the hotel have had a marked improvement. Now that Pandelis (formerly of Le Grand Cafe) has joined the staff as a consultant, the food and service will only improve. I don't normally like hotel restaurants (except in Paris and Thailand), but I think that their claims of exquisite cuisine and affordable prices will not disappoint. Right - Ms Luganova and Mr. Pandelis?

PANTAGRUEL

Lysenka 1, 228-8142

Once one of the best Italian fares in the city. This is a pleasant, friendly and efficient restaurant that has been a favorite of many ex-pats. The pasta dishes are excellent (particularly the penne arabiata, but I do not understand the need to charge extra for the Parmesan cheese. Everything is extra - bread, butter, parmesan, etc. It's a wonder that they don't charge for the air. Come on guys - get with the program. There is a lot of competition out there.

PAPA CARLO (NR)

Pizza fare with a variety of other dishes "a la Ukrainian" ( a little of everything for everybody).

PATIO PIZZA

5a Bessarabska

Square Italian/Vegetarian

"In my opinion, the clear leader here (vegetarian pizza) is Patio Pizza - conveniently located, reasonably priced, and offering a menu extending beyond just pizza - you can't beat it". This is according to Vegan Dar Miner-Nordstrom and Coyne in the 14 Nov 02 issue of the Kyiv Post: The pizzas are indeed good and the variety of other offerings including a great salad bar makes this place worth visiting. Better than eating at Friday's next door.

PECHERA (Cave)

Tarasivska 10a, 244-3372

Continental - Fish

Stalagmites, stalactites, waiters in animal skins and great for parties. This is the way the Gourmet Guide describes this Eric Aigner original. Steaks will be cooked for you on hot stones but beer will come in real glass. Enjoy - this is a fun place and definitely not to be taken seriously.

PELICAN LUX (NR)

Podil, Poshtova Ploscha 3, Pier #14, 463-7360

Italian, French, Spanish, Ukrainian

Another one of these restaurants that tries to be something for everybody. Expensive - so why bother? My only experience with this establishment was to try to have some Blyntsi (crepes) on a Sunday morning and they refused to make them the way we wanted them. The place was empty but the staff of 8 was too lazy to take care of a couple of customers. (The excuse was that they would not know how to bill us.) Some of the guides seem to be positive on it so perhaps, my skepticism is unwarranted. $$$$ 40/8

PENA

330/18 Yaroslaviv Val, 234-1701

Japanese - Sushi

Rated as one of the best in the city by the Food Guy of the Kyiv Post, it is nevertheless an expensive establishment that is beyond the means of most Non-Kruty Ukrainians and ex-pats without unlimited expense accounts. The sushi is good but not as good as that of Nobu. The other Japanese dishes and presentations are outstanding. Bring lots of cash but not a large appetite - unless you bring a lot of cash.

$$$$ 120/12

PERVAK (First Vodka)

Rognydynska Vul 2, 235-0952

Typical Ukrainian tourist (foreign and out-of-town) oriented restaurant with an interesting decor. Food is good to very good, fresh, but nothing outstanding. Service is on the slow side but very friendly (just don't try Western humor on the staff - they just don't understand it). If you have out of town friends visiting you, this is a good place to take them.

PIDKOVA

Golden Gate housing complex in Koncha Zaspa (after Km marker 26 on Stolichna Shose)

Ukrainian - Continental - Fish.

Although our reviews of mainly of Kyiv restaurants, I could not resist this one. Situated in the up-scale community of Koncha - Zaspa (where we plan to build our Golf Club) this restaurant offers a much needed service to the community. Wonderful rustic decor, great food, pleasant and warm atmosphere, and attentive service. Take a ride out - enjoy nature and have a pleasant meal besides. Specialties include "Stone Grill" cooking for meats, fish, and vegetables. They also have a great desert fondue of fruits and chocolate. Enjoy also an assortment of fresh juices and "flips" which is a fruit shake with ice. Reservations recommended as the place books up for parties. (Don't understand the putting green outside which they claim is a mini-golf course. Someone (probably me) should explain to the owners what a putting green or mini-golf course should look like.) The grounds are most pleasant in the summer and the lake is wonderful to sit by.

PILSNER BAR

Pushminska Vul. 20, 235-2101

German - Czech

Good German food and great beer. (I consider Pilsner Urquel one of the best beers in the world outside the Czech Budweiser). The sausages and potato salads are wonderful here. Nice atmosphere, good - but somewhat slow - service.

PODVIRYA (Garden) (NR)

Podil, Andriyivskyj Uzviz 19, 416-4844

Ukrainian

Good Ukrainian food in a pleasant atmosphere. The service tends to be super-slow when the place is busy, but if you are there to relax, you can enjoy the views and the crowds of Andriyivskyj Uzviz and not worry too much. Cheap.

PORTOFINO

Sofiyivska 5, 229-8771

Italian

Once one of the few Italian places offering good pizza. Now it is a "has been". I still visit the place quite often though for their "prosciutto" and their pizza bread chips. Great light meal at a reasonable price. The pizza is not bad but there are many better ones around now. If you are looking for decor, forget about this place. It has not been renovated in the past few years and looks dated and out of place on the present Kyiv restaurant scene. I've seen better looking diners in rural areas.

$$$ 40/8

POSEIDON (NR)

Naberezhno Shosse, Primakov Pier.

Fish - Ukrainian.

The story goes that the establishment is for the really "kruty" with money to burn. The place has a sauna and hotel rooms. You can draw your own conclusion. I'll pass for now. Anyone out there tried it? Let me know.

$$$$ 38/9

PRIMAVERA PIZZA

Melnykova 6, 239-9729

Italian

Standard fare pizza, however on Thursday evening, the owner/staff cook up a limited amount of CousCous and the French ex-pats invade the place. Come early if you like CousCous or you will be disappointed. Pizza's are good. The regular crowd is young (from neighborhood Universities) and loud. Worth a trip. $$ 200/10

QUEEN BEE (NR)

Malynovskoho 5, 451-6145

Chinese - Japanese - Vietnamese - Continental - Slavic.

Add to the cuisines mentioned above: strip tease, gambling, and live music. What do you get? Perhaps the queen bee concept is so that the owner acts like the bee and collects all the hard earned honey from the workers. The diversity is so that everyone comes.

$$$ 150/8

RA CLUB (NR)

Podil, Mezhyhirska 2, 416-6939
