MAMBO (NR)
5 Druzhby Narodiv, 252-8224
Brazilian-Mexican-Sushi-Steak-etc
|
I'm usually wary of "everything-for-everybody" restaurants, but
Scott Lewis of the Kyiv Post (29 Aug 02) seemed to like it. Some
of the fare mentioned in his article includes: sushi, Brazilian
chicken wings, quesadillas, broiled shrimps, tuna salad, chicken
Caesar's salad, carpaccio, enchilada, fish, steak, lamb, etc. Seems
like a little of everything for everybody. Just don't try to eat
this all at once - unless you have plenty of Alka-Seltzer or a cast
iron stomach.

MANDARIN
Podil, 6 Naberezhno-Khryshchativska, 459-0877
Chinese

|
(New Review) Just opened and already one
of the favorite restaurants on the Kyiv scene. We were somewhat put
off by the fact that on our second visit, when we walked in, we were
asked to wait 40 minutes even though there were many empty tables.
However after a few protests we were promptly seated. Built on a floating
barge situated on the Dnipro River, the Mandarin takes its place among
a series of floating restaurants that are becoming popular in Kyiv.
This is one of Alliance's new offerings on the restaurant scene and
promises to be a big hit. With some 25 Chinese cooks under the supervision
of Chef Won Hai Tinom, all the dishes are well prepared and with some
exceptions, all are delicious. Prices are not overly high except for
the sushi whish is very expensive. The menu lists over 100 items but
these do not seem to overwhelm the kitchen since most are variations
on the basics food items. However, some items are not always available.
This is the second time that I tried the famous "Peking Duck" here
and this time I was disappointed. The duck was tough and lacked flavor.
The Chinese crepes or pancakes were too thick and chewy (good Peking
Duck dishes require delicate pancakes). The duck dishes at Lypskyj
Osobniak were much better. I was also disappointed in the fact that
some dishes listed on the menu which I consider traditional Chinese,
were not available (such as the jelly fish). Why have them on the
menu? This is a typical problem in many Ukrainian restaurants and
Kyiv restauranteurs do not seem to be able to cope with this issue.
Also one would expect to have Spring Rolls and Chinese mustard in
a Chinese restaurant. Unfortunately they were neither available nor
did the staff know what I was talking about. The appetizer of Baklazhan
was excellent but the Pig Ears were too chewy and too smoky in flavor.
(A good Chinese mustard would have been perfect with this dish.) The
interior decor looks sumptuous and expensive, with lots of the traditional
Chinese red, but on closer examination it is basically just colored
panels with bamboo style trim and standard "off-the-shelf" Chinese
"tsiatsky", lights and decorations. The restaurant is part of the
Mandarin complex which includes "Moda Bar", a casino, and nightclub.

MANHATTAN (NR)
Hospitalna 12, 294-3048
Continental - Mexican
|
Oh - how I wish this were the real one. Unfortunately the name
applies to a bar with sports oriented TV that is always on. You
can even gamble here. Just watch out for the "girls" that frequent
the place. You will have to beat them off with a stick if you start
chatting with them.

MARCHE
13 Velyko Vasylkivska (Chervonoarmiyska), 451-4050
French

|
Upscale French restaurant from the Alliance
Group. Recently reviewed by the "Food Guy" in the 12th December 2002
issue of The Kyiv Post who gave the restaurant a good recommendation.
Somewhat pricey entrees, but this is to be expected from an "upscale"
restaurant which now seem to be so prevalent in Kyiv. Has anyone ever
thought of opening a "reasonably priced" upscale restaurant? |
MARQUISE DE CHOCOLAT
4 Prorizna, 228-6590
Desserts - Coffee
|
Once the picture of the girl with chocolate
running down her head was interesting, but once you visit the "Dessert
Bar" and see if "in your face" over and over, it gets not only tiring
but sickening. Come on guys - change the pictures already! The decor
of chocolate walls with heavy red drapes and comfortable seating make
for a pleasant experience (especially on cold evenings). The desserts
are excellent and the coffees, teas, and other offerings are reasonably
priced. Enjoy.

MASSANDRA
Naberezhno-Khryschativska 19/21, 416-0440
Ukrainian
|
Why didn't I find this place earlier? Actually
we all drive by there at one time or another, but how many stop in.
This is a "house" restaurant of the Massandra wineries. Ukrainian
wine selections are great and interesting. I particularly liked the
Jerez variety which reminded me of the Tomas Domeq's Jerez wineries
in Southern Spain. Although not as good, they were nevertheless most
interesting and worth trying. The food is Ukrainian "snack-type" and
it goes well with the wine tasting.

McDonalds (NR)
Various locations throughout the city.
American Fast Food.
|
Normally I would not review a chain of restaurants that
is the best known in the world. However, many of my friends have reported
inconsistencies in the quality of the food from one place to another
in Kyiv. One would think that the quality control of McDonald's would
be more careful but I guess that even this slips through the cracks.
PET PEEVE - you would not
thing that McDonald's would stoop to false advertising, so why do
they always show "LARGE FRIES"
on their special meals ads but serve you "small
fries"? Are they concerned with my diet? Thanks, but I
expect to get what is advertised. Numerous complaints to the various
managers at the various locations fall on deaf ears. They just don't
seem to care. |
MELODIA (NR)
Volodymyrska 36, 228-7683
Continental - Ukrainian
|
In the hotel that faces SBU headquarters
and in which Jaroslav Hasek's "The Fateful Adventures of The Good
Soldier Svejk" was partially written. This does not mean that you
will become a similar world renowned writer if you visit this place,
but at least you will feel secure that while you are watching the
ferocious looking SBU headquarters, you will not be mugged. The fare
is varied - something for everyone. No complaints, but then again
- no raves.

One of Uncle Sam's Group of restaurants with the Mimino name (named

Wonderful setting with photos of the actor and movie scenes throughout.
The Georgian food is very good but just not as hearty as is that
of Horetz. However you should definitely put this on your list of
favorites.

Typical Ukrainian fare. Nothing spectacular. Reasonably priced.
I have yet to distinguish the cuisines of the main dining rooms
from one hotel to the other so the reviews of all hotel restaurants
will be the same. The food is cheap, filling, and representative
of Ukrainian kitchens. I spent two year eating here almost every
other day. This is not a recommendation, just a statement of fact.

NEW BOMBAY PALACE
13 Druzhba Narodiv, 261-1788
Indian.
|
According to Vegan Dar Miner-Nordstrom
in the 14 Nov 02 issue of the Kyiv Post: "New Bombay's Kashmiri chef
Makhan Singh Bhangari produces a wealth of classic dishes". If this
is anything like the old Bombay Palace, then definitely you should
put this on your list. Indian food is one of my favorites and I am
most anxious to try this restaurant that all who have visited it so
far, recommend highly. |

Nobel Restaurant (NR)
65 Velyka Vasylkivska vul., 238-6971
European
|
This restaurant has to receive a huge prize
for ridiculous advertising. Here are some excerpts: "Nobel…, stuns
from the door: it's obvious that the management didn't save on anything….";
"The interior is plain, but expensive…." (interesting, a plain interior
that stuns - what a concept!); "Nobel will obviously get a loyal following
among Kyiv's sweet teeth…" (who wants to be followed by teeth?); "Most
of legal alcohol can be ordered…" (do they also serve illegal alcohol
- "samohon" anyone?); "Nobel's plans are far going…and include if
not delivering Nobel prizes to visitors….." (interesting concept -
getting a Nobel prize for eating in a restaurant in Kyiv. Will this
fall into the Science category - can you distinguish if it is animal,
vegetable, or mineral?); but best of all: "Restaurant
with Great Brains". (Are they competing with Hannibal Lechter?)
Who wrote this stuff? The management may have spent a lot of money
on the decor and imported an Italian Chef, but why couldn't they spend
just a little more and use one of the great advertising companies
that now exist in Kyiv. Or the least they could do is ask an English
speaking person to review the text in their ad. |
NOBU
Shota Rustavelli 12, 246-7734
Japanese - Sushi

|
Definitely my favorite for sushi and Japanese fare. Warm, pleasant,
with attentive service and the best sushi in Kyiv. Since the place
is always busy, the fish is sure to be fresh. I only wish the prices
were a little lower so that I could visit it more often, but then
this is Kyiv and the source of supply is so, so far away.

O'BRIEN'S IRISH PUB
Vul. Mykhaylivska 17a., 229-0214
Irish Pub

|
Voted as #1 pub in Kyov by the Kyiv Post 10 October 02 Reader's
Poll (probably by the "Rat Pack" who remain fiercely loyal and who
incidentally get 50% discounts from their prices. Does this tell
you something about the prices in general?) This place is definitely
a lively and interesting establishment. Huge breakfasts are a specialty
and most types of beer and drinks are available by a crew of experienced
bartenders. My vote would have gone to Golden Gate, but then I'm
more fond of their food and decor. The narrow "girl watching" hall
balcony at O'Brien's is "the" place to sit, but on crowded evenings
it can mean more spilled beer than consumed. (Just a few inches
extension over the staircase would make all the difference in the
world. How about it guys? You already have the contractors as your
steady customers! They would make short work of it.)

OKEO (HOUSE OF SUSHI)
Volodymyrska 46, 247-4508
Japanese - Sushi

|
Another "Up-Scale" restaurant of the "sushi variety". Amazing how
many sushi places now abound in Kyiv and only a few really know
what they are doing. Frankly, it amazes me that Okeo is still in
business since I walk by there 2-3 times a day and the most I have
seen is 4 customers in the place. Usually there are none. How can
a place have "fresh" sushi when there is no one ever there to consume
it? Can you imagine a sushi bar throwing away thousands of dollars
worth of fresh or chilled fish per week? My partner (who is Ukrainian
and loves sushi) ate there only once but her comments were: "prices
were outrageous and the sushi was only so-so". Take your chances
and send me your comments.
