JOHN BULL PUB
Saksahanskoho 36, 220-1369
Continental - English - Ukrainian.

|
Loved the place when it first opened. The
food was great, Western, and interesting. However after a few months,
it became blah. The service was the best, now just mediocre. The atmosphere
was lively, now only so-so. Definitely not a place to go out of your
way to find or visit. If I'm in the neighborhood, I will stop in for
a beer, but that is about it. |
Jokey
Vul. Akademika Hlushkova 12, 266-5537
Continental - International.
|
This restaurant boasts 4 different rooms.
Greek, Ukrainian, Blue and Red. (Never heard of the later nationalities,
but so be it.) The interesting thing is that in the various "halls"
you will find Spanish food, Japanese Teriyaki, French meat dishes,
and American desserts. Thus - a little of everything for everyone.
A truly International kitchen and establishment. Live music every
evening and the place is never empty. Maybe Ukrainians are becoming
a "restaurant society" after all. |
JOSS ENGLISH PUB
Left bank - Vul. Raissy Okypnoi 2.
Continental
|
When first opened it promised so much for a town starved for a
good pub. However, it never came to pass. If you find yourself on
the left bank, you should definitely stop in for a cold one, but
to make a special trip? I don't think so. Food is so-so.

KAFFA

Coffee

Voted #1 by Kyiv Post readers as Best Cup O' Mud. Great and varied
coffees but little else. Nice decor if you don't mind sitting on
children's stools. Why didn't anyone think of introducing good desserts
with the good coffee?

KHRESHCHATYK (HOTEL RESTAURANTS)
(NR)
Khreshchatyk 14, 229-2730
Ukrainian.
|
Not being fond of Ukrainian hotel cuisines (after having spent
the first two years here having to eat it almost daily), I reserve
my judgment and refer you to some of the Kyiv dining guides for
direction.. So be guided accordingly and enjoy. By the way - The
General Director of the hotel, Mr. Ivan Arkhipov, is one of the
more progressive hotel managers in Kyiv and tries very hard to please
his clients.

From the moment you walk in onto this floating restaurant, you
feel that you are in for an adventure. The decor and atmosphere
is definitely Ukrainian (until you are spoken to in Russian by the
staff). The place is very popular with tourists and my US friends
head there whenever they are in town. Food is very good and plentiful.
This is a good place to sample Ukrainian fare at its country best.
Music on weekends and the outdoor section is booked solid during
the summer months.

A favorite among the Ukrainian political and business elite. High
prices and indifferent service makes this a difficult place to judge.
However the food is excellent and the decor impeccable.

KOLESO THEATRE CAFE
Podil, Andriyivskyj Uzviz 16, 416-0527
Ukrainian.

|
If you are planning a party, or an outing with your staff or friends,
or if you have visitors from abroad (who understand Ukrainian),
this is a wonderful place to take them. I had one of the most enjoyable
experiences when I took our office staff to this theater/restaurant.
The food is good (but not exceptional) but the whole experience
is enjoyable. Decor is basic old theater-like but this adds to the
atmosphere.

Kozachok
118 Vul. Kyrovohradska, 250-9352
Ukrainian

|
I was recently visiting a friend who lives
in the neighborhood of Kozachok and was invited there for diner. What
a treat! This is the type of food that you imagine enjoying if you
were living in a Ukrainian village. Hearty, tasty, filling, and conducive
to good times. Try the "deruny" or pancakes and varenyky here. You
won't be disappointed (unless you are trying to maintain a diet).
The musicians, the rustic setting, and the country cuisine make for
a most memorable evening. The restaurant is designed as a local Ukrainian
village pub or "shynok" and in the summer it offers outside seating.
Prices are most reasonable. |
KOZAK MAMAI
vul. Prorizna, 4, 228-4273
Ukrainian.

|
For an interesting review on this and other Ukrainian restaurants
see the 13-19 December issue of What's On Magazine page 24.
Wonderful and reasonably priced Ukrainian restaurant with a Kozak
theme. Part of the Arizona group, this restaurant features a large
number of authentic Ukrainian dishes from borsch to varenyky. Whenever
my friends come in from the US or Canada, this is one restaurant
that they always visit. If I want to know who is in town from the
"Diaspora" all I need to do is talk to the waiters and waitresses.
The service is excellent and attentive; the ambiance - pleasant;
and the decor, with its "Cossacks on the river" settings, very interesting.
You can't go wrong when you are in the center of town by visiting
this establishment. Great place for business lunches also. Strolling
Ukrainian musicians on most evenings and weekends. Recently rated
as one of the best for Ukrainian cuisine by What's On in their 13-19
December 2002 issue.

KRUHLA BASHTA (Round Bastion)
(NR)
Shorsa 44, 295-6845
Ukrainian - Continental.
|
Once considered one of the better restaurants in Kyiv and due to
its association with Nika it had and continues to have the freshest
ingredients. Variety of Ukrainian and European dishes, all well
prepared. I have not been there for a long time so my recollections
are a little blurry.

LE GRAND CAFE
Muzeyni Provulok 4, 228-7208

|
Once managed by my friend Pandelis, this up-scale and fashionable
restaurant replaced "The Studio" which once was the in-place of
Kyiv. No matter what you order from the menu, you will not be disappointed.
The food, service, wine selection, and presentations are all great.
My only reservation is that the restaurant is too often empty and
is beginning to fray along the edges. (Chipped tiles, frayed carpets,
worn cushions, etc). It would be a shame if Kyiv were to lose such
a wonderful restaurant to inattention.

Since Liudmilla Luganova took over the
Dnipro Hotel, the restaurants (now overseen by Pandelis Kouris) have

hill. This one happens to be one of the better hotel restaurants in
the city and it can be highly recommended. |

When I was presented the bill here after a mediocre meal, I almost
went into shock. Huge prices for uninteresting and un-tasty Vietnamese
fare. My taste buds, so carefully cultivated in Hanoi for real Vietnamese
food, were offended. I would not recommend it.

LYON also BRASSERIE LYON
Passage - Khreshchatyk 15, 228-7883
French

|
To take this name from the capital of French Culinary Art and defile
it in such a manner should be punishable by having to eat McDonald's
Cheese Burgers for the rest of one's life. Totally uninteresting
"French" food done in a Ukrainian manner at very high prices. The
only positive here is "location". The area is starved for good restaurants
(aside from the great "Apollo").

LUN VAN
26 Bohdana Khmelnytskoho, 229-8191
Chinese

|
Chinese cooking was once considered the most reasonable and affordable
in the US. This is why it became so popular there. I don't even
want to mention the prices of Chinese food in China, Hong Kong,
Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, etc. So why is it that in Kyiv,
it is considered normal to charge high prices for simple Chinese
food. Is it to make us pay for the decor? For importing Chinese
cooks? It certainly can't be the ingredients. Although the food
is very good at Lun Van, the portions are small and the prices need
to come down to make the place affordable and popular. How many
"Up-Scale" restaurants does Kyiv need? Most already sit empty anyway.

LYPSKYJ OSOBNYAK
Lypska 15, 254-0090
Ukrainian Haute Cuisine

|
When using the term "Haute Cuisine" - Ukrainian would be one of
the last adjectives that one would confer to it. However, surprisingly,
this restaurant does it, and does it well. Everything about Lypskyj
Osobnyak is exceptional. From the decor, to the service, to the
best wine selection in Kyiv, to the food, and to the sumptuous desserts.
I particularly loved the duck dishes (and I have tried them all).
I once considered Peking Duck or duck prepared in Prague as the
best around. Now I have found an equal. Definitely make this your
favorite also. It is mine.
