(for

at mokra@usukraine.org)
Since its founding in the mid-13th century, Lviv has been a center of
international relations and continues to remain Ukraine's (gate to Europe.)Lviv's
favorable geographic position, developed transport infrastructure, and
rich industrial, agricultural, and technical-scientific potential allows
the city to be an important international center of trade. More than
550 major industrial enterprises and associations, representative offices
of 18 foreign companies, and over 1,000 enterprises with foreign capital
operate in Lviv.
For many years machinery-building, metallurgy and electronics were
leading industries in the region, comprising 40% of the local economy.
Nowadays, food industry makes up as much as 30% of the total regional
production volume, engineering, electronics, and metallurgy - 17%, fuel
industry - 20%, and energetics - 8%. Chemical, consumer goods, paper,
wood-processing, and construction industries form the rest.
In the past, a considerable part of the electrotechnical industry
was directed to military and space needs. Nowadays, the JSC -Concern-Electron'
produces 10% of TV-sets in Ukraine, and "Poliaron" manufactures condensers
and electric vacuum devices. Other enterprises produce radio-electronic
and radio-measuring equipment, tuners for satellite television, color
television tubes, electronic-ray tubes, electric-lighting devices, etc.
Chemical and oil-chemical plants of the Lviv region, enhanced by assistance
and work of scientific and research/development institutes, produce
5% of the gross chemical output in Ukraine.
The following industries currently provide many opportunities for foreign
investment in the region: medical and microbiological, machinery-building
and metal treatment, tool-building, oil and chemical, light industry
(textile and apparel polygraphics), construction materials, agriculture,
food processing and packaging, and agricultural machinery.

Innovative Idea |

The (miracle mouse) was developed by the privately owned enterprise
MIKROS at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Lviv. By simply
putting the finger in the slot in the mouse, connected to a PC, the
user can measure the condition of the his/her nervous system, heart
rhythm, blood pressure, tension and other indicators of the person's
autonomous vegetative system in general. It also allows to compare the
indicators received during the day, week, month or year. The device
functions by mathematical software which measures momentary changes
of R-R intervals, keeping them in the computer's memory and adapting
the acquired results. The adapter is part of the mouse and does not
require an external power supply or connection of electrodes to the
user.

Lviv
IT Company Doing Business in the U.S. |
| |
|
Ukraine's
industrial inheritance from the former Soviet Union, particularly its
military-industrial complex, has produced excellent specialists, engineers,
and programmers. Many foreign firms have opened operations in Ukraine
to tap into the local IT educated workforce while taking advantage of
lower labor costs. These offshore software development companies represent
thousands of Ukrainians working for Western companies. It is estimated
that there are more than 200 companies with anywhere from 5-50 developers
with operations in Ukraine, and several firms employ more than 250 workers.
Inspired by positive world market trends in 1 998, LCG, a Ukrainian-American
joint venture, created an IT division (Lionsoft.net) with a special
emphasis on e-commerce, databases, and web development. (A deep look
into the clients' needs and comprehensive IT knowledge allow Lionsoft
to provide the best service in the business. We are growing, and we
are ready to help others bring IT into their businesses with the most
efficiency), said Lyubomyr Oliynyk, Senior Project Manager of Lionsoft.
One of the Lionsoft's first clients is the American company IESC Solutions,
an independent business unit of one of the largest technical and business
development organizations in the world - The International Executive
Service Corps (IESC). Founded in 1964 by David Rockefeller, IESC has
completed more than 21,000 projects for entrepreneurs, small- and medium-sized
enterprises, non-profit organizations and governments in more than 120
countries. Lionsoft helped IESC Solutions move their business online.
Starting with system design, Lionsoft developed and set up a multi-function
web site - www.iescsolutions.com. Modern internet technologies dramatically
improved the speed of workflow and effectiveness of communications between
IESC clients, management teams, and experts in different industries.
This project started at the beginning of 2001, and by the end of the
year the web site went online. Thousands of people are currently registered,
and this number continues to grow.
Lionsoft is also affiliated with an American NGO, CIME Endeavor Group
(www.cimenet.org), whose mission is to support evolving democracies
in Central & Eastern Europe (CEE) and in the Newly Independent States
(NIS), especially Ukraine and neighboring countries. Since 1999, CIME
has chosen Lionsoft for its IT contracts. Most recently, Lionsoft has
designed and engineered a distance e-learning course using CIME's newly
developed Corporate Gov ernance materials. The web site (cg.cimenet.org)
has educational chapters on Corporate Governance and tests of the user's
knowledge on each chapter. After passing each test the user gets a score
and feedback on his/her answers.
Lionsoft has experience in the European market, too. In 2000, Lionsoft
experts worked together with a leading UK software development company,
Merant Int (www.merant.com). The Lionsoft team helped to design several
large-scale web projects, such as JD Williams (www.jdwilliams.co.uk)
and Tagma (www.tagmanet.com), as well as a number of smaller initiatives.
Business Links is a bulletin highlighting selected Ukrainian companies
seeking business ventures with U.S. counterparts. Through the development
of the Business Links database of potential business partners, USUF
hopes to play the role of an information clearinghouse to further the
economic development of Ukraine. Interested parties are invited to provide
information for inclusion in our business database. Please include:
contact name, company name, address, phone, fax, e-mail, web address,
and area of business interest.
The U.S.-Ukraine Foundation (USUF) is a not-for-profit non-governmental
organization established in 1991 to facilitate democratic development,
encourage free market reform and enhance human rights in Ukraine. In
promoting business and economic development between Ukraine and the
U.S., the USUF seeks to facilitate an open exchange of information between
business entities. WHILE MAKING EVERY EFFORT TO OBTAIN ACCURATE INFORMATION,
THE U.S.-UKRAINE FOUNDATION DOES NOT GUARANTEE THE VALIDITY OF CLAIMS
MADE IN THE COMPANY PROFILES NOR DOES IT ENDORSE ANY CORPORATE ENTITIES
MENTIONED HEREIN. The Foundation provides no opinions or judgments regarding
the likelihood of success or failure of any possible venture. We, therefore,
re commend due diligence on the part of any potential business partners.
